Ah, I Remember it Well... Part One.

"... the day the Laird's (Brigadier General Ernest Moncrieff Paul Stewart of Coll) remains came back to Coll. The ferryman would let certain lads on board sometimes to help with the ropes. Gilliesbuig (Archibald) and I were up at the bow, watching the passengers and goods being helped into the ferryboat from the mailboat. The Laird's Factor was there with a wee box. As we headed back for the jetty Archibald whispered "Aye, well, the Laird has not come back after all." "Yes he has," I whispered back, "there he is sitting on the Factor's knee..." The look of non comprehension, changing to horror, as Archibald looked at the wee box draped with a tartan cloth was a sight to see. Cremations were viewed with great suspicion in those days on the island."
