The Coll Show

THE COLL SHOW

The 76th Annual Horticultural and Agricultural Show took place on Friday August 1st at Coll Village Hall.

Early morning mist and rain, which had threatened to put a damper on the days proceedings, had cleared by midday, allowing the first judging event of the day to pass far more pleasantly than anyone had anticipated.

Eight farms entered stock in the sheep classes, where Mike and Anna Taylor of Lonban came from nowhere to win three of the trophies in an event where they had never previously had such a success.

By mid-afternoon things were in full swing, with cakes and teas being organised by Mrs Pam Garnett and Mrs Rena Prentice as well as many other assorted sideshows and activities.

Mrs Chrissie MacKinnon, assisted by Mrs Fay Anderson, directed the young Highland dancers (Sara Oliphant, Andrew Fraser, Helena Porrelli, Amy Mitchell, Laura Oliphant, Shona Meryon, Sophie Buchan and Lawrie Neil Porrelli) in the Fling, the Sword Dance and the Haymakers jig.

The pet classes were again judged by Peter and Diana McDonnell, with Skinners `Simply the Best' award going to Louise Woods and her lovely collie dog, `Bob'.

Sporting events, this year directed by David Moore Junior, were next on the agenda. Andrew Fraser was the first man home in the Under 12's road race from the pier whilst the Coll Children's Cup was jointly awarded to Amy Mitchell and Ruth Mackie.

There were five keen participants in the demanding cross country run from Cliad. Charlie Self led the way over the rough hill ground, closely followed by young Derek Griffiths in second place.

The presentation of cups and trophies took place at 5.00pm in the Village Hall. Chairman Mr Peter Smalley called upon Mrs Shirley Morrison to present the awards.

Mr Donald Harrison, judging the Horticultural classes applauded the quality of all the vegetables on display, in particular the onions, potatoes and cauliflowers, with a special mention going to Frank Anderson's winning potatoes. Vegetable growing conditions have not been ideal this year (when are they ever?) but Mr Harrison said quiter emphatically that `you could take this show anywhere'.

The Coll Show Dance was, as usual, a great success. Music was provided by the Malin Ceilidh Band and the star raffle prize, a brand new TV, was won by Paul Markwick
