For only the second time in recent history, a Cattle and Sheep Sale was held on Coll on 28th November 1992 when Tom Wallace of Argyll Auction Co. Ltd offered around 200 cattle and 300 sheep for sale to approximately 11 mainland dealers plus a large contingent of locals, some of whom took the opportunity to buy ‘one for the freezer’ or to start up small flocks of their own.
Stock from various consigners was sold at four centres: Cornaigbeg, Gallanach, Ballard and Breachacha. A generally sound trade was experienced throughout the day and it is hoped that Coll sales may become a regular event in the future as an alternative to expensive and time consuming trips to markets elsewhere.
At the end of the Sale, cattle and sheep were loaded onto lorries brought over on the morning ferry and the Lord of the Isles made a special evening trip to take them to Oban and their final destinations. |
