Coll Agricultural and Horticultural Show

The Annual Coll Show was held on Friday 7th. August 1992. After weeks of unsettled weather, a wann, sunny day drew out the crowds giving one of the largest attendances in the Show's history. There have been a number of changes on the island over the last 18 months or so and this was reflected in the number of new exhibitors and some contributions which were regretfully absent.

The dry spring and cold, wet summer took it's toll on the Horticulture entries but despite this, the judge, Mr. MacKenzie, felt the standard of produce considering the difficulties was remarkably high. Particular credit must go to Catriona Brodie, who won the Horticulture Cup for the 15th. consecutive year!

All the classes in the Home Produce section were well represented and the entries were up to their usual high standard. Chrissie MacKinnon once again excelled, winning all three cups in the section.

There has been a steady increase in the number and standard of Children's entries in recent years and once again it was heartening to see them entering into the spirit of the Show. They and the adults enjoyed the various sports events, the road race for men and women being particularly well supported.

There were fewer entries than usual in the Sheep Classes but the standard, particularly those in the cross bred section were extremely high. Colin Kennedy dominated most categories and won all the cups. This was well deserved and is a reflection of his hard work and enthusiasm for the Show over the years.

The crowd was well entertained throughout the afternoon, with many side shows run by various Coll committees; the Pet and Dog Handling competition was once again judged by Len Church; and musical entertainment was provided by the Bog Cotton Reel Band and friends.

The Hall was opened for viewing at 4.30 and shortly after 5pm., Angus MacFarlane called upon the retiring convenor Hamish MacRae to present the prizes. A dance with music by Martin Pottinger and Campbell Brown, was held in the evening, rounding off a successful day.

A bunch of pirates invaded the Lord of the Isles one morning and took over the boat on it's journey to Tiree, 'robbing and plundering' passengers to collect £300 bankroll + for ITV's Telethon. The members of Cal Mac's crew entered into the spirit by eventually repelling the boarders at Coll with water hoses.
