The Road to the Isles, As it used to be...

The heart of the route to Coll and Tiree naturally lies in Oban, "the Queen of the West," From Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the South the L.M.&S. Railway provides a rapid and comfortable service to this terminus. Here awaits, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, the luxuriously appointed T.S.M.V. "Lochearn" of the David MacBrayne fleet to convey passengers by Tobermory and Kilchoan, to Coll, Tiree and the north, returning by the same route on the following day.

For those who prefer journeying by road, the route by Balloch and Loch Lomondside to Tarbet, thence through Glenfalloch and Crianlarich (or by Arrochar, Rest-and-be thankful, Inverary, Dalmally), Lochawe, Pass of Brander, Connel, presents one of the most picturesque panoramas that mind can imagine or heart desire, whether one travels by public `bus or private car.

Again, the well-known Royal Route by the Turbine Steamer, Saint Columba, through the Kyles of Bute to Ardrishaig, thence by `bus through the Pass of Melfort, Glengallon and Glen-luchar, is an avenue of approach to Oban that is second to none for variety and charm of scenery.

Those who can afford the time have also at their disposal the well-appointed steamers, "Dunara Castle" and "Hebrides" which sail from Glasgow on alternate Mondays and Thursdays, by Greenock, the Mull of Kintyre, Sound of Islay, Colonsay, Iona (or Oban), to Tiree, arriving on the following morning.

In the summer months there is a daily service from Renfrew Aerodrome to The Hebrides provided by the Northern and Scottish Airways Ltd. At Tiree passengers are landed on The Reef, after an exhilarating voyage of an hour-and-a-half s duration and conveyed by motor cars to any point of the island.

Full information regarding these various ways and modes of travelling can be had on application to the Companies concerned.

Trips by motor boat to Staffa and Iona (about twenty miles) can now be arranged for in Tiree during the holiday season. Pic-nic parties can be catered for; and the cost is extremely moderate.
