Coll-achs

We are very sad to record the death of Donald Kennedy, or "Donald Stornoway", as he was affectionately called, on December 17th 1982. R.J.S. writes;

Donald was born in Lewis in 1919, third son of the late Mr and Mrs Murdo Kennedy. He first came to Coll with Messrs Tawse in 1963 when the road to the new pier was being built. Donald was an expert blaster and he was largely responsible for all the rock blasting that had to be done during the road's construction.

He quickly endeared himself to the islanders because of his happy, cheerful disposition, and especially to Morag Macdonald whom he met and married within eighteen months. After the pier road was completed, Donald and Morag left Coll for several years, two of which they spent in Shetland, where Donald was a grouting charge-hand sealing a dam in Sandy Loch, not far from Lerwick. But the Kennedys always wanted to return to Coll and in 1974 they were allocated one of the new houses in Carnan Road and Donald then became one of the two island roadmen - a job he retained until last year, when he was forced to retire due to ill-health.

Donald was very good at amusing young children, and he will be sadly missed not only by them, but by all the people of Coll and family and friends outside. To Morag, we extend special sympathy in her sad loss.
