Coll Agricultural and Horticultural Show

COLL AGRICULTURAL AND HORTICULTURAL SHOW

On August 5th 1988 the 67th Annual Coll Agricultural and Horticultural Show was held at the Village Hall in Arinagour. As is expected, it was very well supported both by locals and visitors alike, despite the unseasonal weather.

Torrential rain reduced the spectators at the Sheep Judging in the morning to all but a handful of hardy souls. However, there were a very healthy number of entries in the Sheep Classes and the prizes were more widely distributed among Coll Farmers than in recent years.

Meanwhile within the protection of the Village Hall the Horticulture, Handcrafts, Home Produce and Childrens' classes were being judged. The standard of all the exhibits was high and the number of entries was heartening with the exception of the Knitting Classes. Entries in these Classes have declined over the past few years, which is discouraging for those who loyally support us every year. Hopefully this year the knitting needles will be brought out earlier and the tables filled.

There was a marginal lull in the downpour in the early afternoon and the events began with the Pets Section, in which dogs, goats, birds etc. were paraded round a very soggy field watched carefully by Nurse Elizabeth Smith, who did her best to keep all of the entrants happy and praise all their pets. Some brave side-shows were set up and Mr Davie Moore and Mr David Allan staged sports for Children of all ages, including a 3 mile Road Race and culminating in a very slippy tug-of-war between the Youth and the Men of Coll, the former winning convincingly!

The hall was opened for viewing earlier than billed and Mr Alan Brodie as retired Show Committee Convenor was called upon to present the Cups.

It was great to see the Highland Dancing back to the Show again and a display, which had to be postponed due to the weather, was presented on the Stage in the Village Hall by Coll children and women, trained by Mrs Chrissie MacKinnon.

In the evening a well attended Show Dance was held with music provided by Willie Cameron and his Band, and the Prize-Giving Dance was held the following Friday.
