Coll Show
Despite its resident population of around 160 and while neighbouring islands have ceased to hold annual shows, Coll held its 70th. Agricultural and Horticultural Show on Friday 2nd. August 1991.
In recent years, the weather on Show day has been pretty mixed or down right awful but this year the sun shone on us all. The hall was full in the early morning with people, residents and visitors alike, enthusiastically turning out to enter their exhibits.
It was disappointing to see the continued decline in the handcraft classes. However, this was offset by a strong horticultural section, an increase in the children's entries, the usual excellent array of home produce and a significant increase in the number of people exhibiting in the sheep classes. Perhaps the most notable feature of the show was that for the first time in about fifteen years, Mrs. Catriona Brodie didn't win the Horticultural Cup outright, only managing a share of first prize with Jill Lightfoot. A healthy crowd attended the events in the afternoon and were entertained by the Sheep judging, pets and dog handling competition, road race, ' children's sports and a display of Highland dancing. Willie Cameron and his band, who later played at the Show Dance, tuned up early providing live entertainment, and a number of side shows were run by members of Coll's various committees.
Once all the events were over the Hall was opened for viewing and Mr. Hamish MacRae, Convenor, called upon his mother, Mrs. Mary MacRae, to present the Cups to the following cup winners:
