Visit to Coll by the Moderator of the Church of Scotland.
The visit of the Moderator whilst on a tour of the Presbytery of Lorne and Mull, was notable in that it was the first ever visit, as far as is known, by a Moderator of the Church of Scotland.
There was a well attended service in the Parish Church followed by a social evening in the village Hall. During the course of the service the Moderator was introduced to three of the congregation undertaking a lay preacher course. He also presented Mr. William Flett with a certificate recognising his long period of service as an Elder to the Church on Coll. Mr Flett has served as Lay Preacher for the past thirty years and as a builder to trade made it his task to look after the fabric of the church building. It is probably true to say that without his dedication there would not be a Church of Scotland on the island today and so it was particularly fitting that his services should be recognised by the Moderator.
A buffet supper followed in the Village Hall with entertainments which included music by the Bog Cotton Band, an anthem by the coir and a short play by the Sunday School which all contributed to a successful and enjoyable evening. The Moderator and his wife were presented with a bowl turned in wood and carved with a Celtic relief made by Martin Lunghi and a collage made by the Sunday School featuring local fauna and flora.
Morning worship is held throughout the year at 11.30 every Sunday Morning in the Parish Church. |
