Coll Show - 3rd August, 1990.
Show Day on Coll in 1990 threatened to be dominated by a drenching mist, Spirits were low among those who came early to enter their exhibits but as the day progressed, the weather improved steadily.
Judging commenced shortly after one o'clock with Mr. & Mrs. MacKinnon of Ardnamurchan judging the sheep and Home Produce Classes respectively. The Handcrafts were judged by Mrs. C Stevenson and the Horticulture Classes by Mr. MacPhail of Tiree.
The Sheep Classes were as usual well supported and a healthy competitive atmosphere prevailed. The Home Produce tables werent as laiden with baking as usual. However, the large number of children's entries was very encouraging, with all of the classes being well supported both by Coll children and visitors.
Mr. MacPhail was impressed by the number of entries in the Horticulture classes and commented on the fact that Coll vegetables were further ahead than on Tiree! As we have come to expect, the display of floral entries was most Impressive and provided an attractive backdrop in the hall. The standard of the Hand Craft entries was high and there was a significant increase in the number of non knitting exhibits.
The Sheep judging was held later than in previous year and was consequently observed by a large crowd, who were later entertained by a Highland Dancing Competition among Mrs. Chrissie MacKinnon ' dancers, There were a number of fundraising sideshows including a Beat the Coallie; Split the Rat; Hurl a Soggy Sponge' and a roll Treasure Hunt' all of which were generously supported, Live music supplied by John Renton and his Band added to the congenial atmosphere of the afternoon. The children were encouraged to expend their excess energy competing in the sports organised by Messrs Moore.
The hall was opened for viewing at about 4.45pm. and the cups were presented by Mrs. M, MacRae of Cornaig. One of the busiest dances of the summer followed in the evening with music by John Renton - everyone enjoying the night despite the midges.
