Burns Supper

BURNS SUPPER

After a keen group of islanders had taken on the running of the Coll Magazine, funds were found to be rather low and more money would be needed to print the 1990 edition. So a Burns Supper was planned. Much effort was put into the organising of entertainments and the actual supper with the result surpassing all expectations.

The evening started at 7.30 for the 62 folk that attended with a dram to toast the Haggis which was carried in by Hamish MacRae smartly dressed in kilt and sporran with the fine fiddle playing of Mike Taylor, who accompanied all singing artistes throughout the evening. The Selkirk Grace was said by NeilMorrison and Robert Sturgeon addressed the Haggis. After a very ample supper of Haggis, tatties and neeps plus salt herring the chairman for the evening, Allan Brodie, started off the entertainment by introducing John Fraser to give the Immortal Memory. After this very informative speech there were many readings and songs spoken and sung by Lee Bell, George Binnie, John Fraser, Elda Lunghi, Brian and Moira MacIntyre, Alistair Anderson and John Porrelli. Brian MacIntyre called for a toast to the lasses with Mrs. Stewart replying on their behalf. At the end of the entertainments Peter Smalley called for a toast to thank the artistes and the very important cooks! The evening continued with spirited dancing to the music of Colin Kennedy and Patrick and a bar was run by Hamish MacRae and Dougie Brown.
