Coll Agricultural and Horticultural Show
The 68th. Annual Meeting of the Isle of Coll Agricultural and Horticultural Society was held on Fri. 4th. August. In comparison with recent years the weather was good for the event and the Show attracted much support.
Due to Cal. Mac's special early ferry not being available this year, it proved necessary to reschedule events by three hours. As a result the sheep judging had many more observers than usual. This year's judge, Angus MacKechnie, commented on the high number and quality of the entries. Every class was well represented, including for the first time, a £10 prize for the Best Continental Sheep.
Inside the hall, Mrs. Cameron and Mrs. O'Dea of Tiree, the judges for the Horticulture and Industrial Sections, commented on the high standard and extraordinary array of produce available for their inspection. Another new event this year was the Dog Handling Competition which was won by the Rev. Andrew Greaves with Danny the Cocker Spaniel. There was also a pet show and a number of side shows. The fine display of Highland Dancing was once again organised by Mrs. Chrissie MacKinnon, who also trained the young dancers. There followed an afternoon of sports for children organised by Mr. Davie Moore Senior. Towards the end of the afternoon, Hamish MacRae, the Convenor of the Show, called on Mrs. Crotty to present the Cups to all the prize winners, and thanked everyone who had taken part in the show.
In the evening a dance was held with music by John Carmichael. This was well attendedand made for a very enjoyable conclusion to the Day.
