Births.

To Stef Biel and Gill Lightfoot, Glaic, a son James Joseph, born on Oct. 27th. 1989; a brother for Catriona.

To John Porrelli and Alison McVey, Ceann-a-Bhaigh, a son, Lawrence Neil, on Nov. 17th. 1989, a brother for Helena.

Marriage.

The marriage took place in St. Ninian's Church, Edinburgh, on Sat. July 1st. 1989 between Fraser, eldest son of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas McClung, Edinburgh, and Nicola, youngest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Stewart, Isle of Coll. The young couple are now living near Kelso.

Deaths.

It is with great regret that we have to record the deaths of several Collachs or people closely associated with Coll.

Mrs. Bremner on September 24th. Katie Kennedy on August 8th. 1989. 1989. Lachie MacDonald on January 28th, Margaret MacFadyen on Feb. 11th. 1990. 1990.

It was with a deep sense of shock that the islanders heard of the premature and tragic death of Katie Kennedy last August and our deepest sympathy goes to her husband, Angus, and daughter, Flora, who had just flown back to her job in Australia the day before. Katie was born in Uist but much of her married life was spent in Strathblane, from whence she continued her highly respected nursing career at Gartnavel Hospital. Katie also did a lot to keep the Gaelic language alive in Glasgow. Her funeral, which took place in Blanefield Church, was attended not only by her family and friends from the Glasgow Coll Assciation but also by many of her nursing colleagues and Angus' colleagues from the Strathclyde Police and the following day Katie made her last journey to Coll where the whole island turned out to pay their last respects to a very fine lady.

Mrs. Katie Bremner (late of Totamore) died peacefully in Callander on September 24th at the age of 90 and we send our sincere sympathy to her large family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in their sad loss. Katie Bremner was born in Uist but came to Coll as a young girl to work in the dairy at Grishipol for Dugald MacFadyen (brother of John MacFadyen). She married Fred Bremner in 1920 after he left the army and they settled at Totamore where they raised their family and ran the croft and Fred was for many years one of the Coll roadmen. Mrs. Bremner's funeral took place at Kllionnaig cemetery on september 30th. where many of her family were represented in addition to a large number of Collachs.

We were very sorry to hear of the sudden passing of two old friends within a fortnight of each other at the beginning of this year. Firstly, Lachie MacDonald , on January 28th., who had not enjoyed good health for a number of years but who, nevertheless, carried on with his great love of gardening whenever he was able. Lachie was born on Coll estate, during the early 1960's he was largely responsible for growing the commercial daffodils ad tulips for Mr. Kenneth Stewart, which were sent to a market in Glasgow. He moved to Appin for about 12 years where he developed a very successful market garden for Mr. Hutchinson, retiring back to Coll in 1975. He continued doing part-time gardening at the Coll Hotel until two years ago. We extend our deep sympathy to Lachie's wife Katina, and his nephews and nieces, who were unable to be present at his funeral due to the stormy weather.

Our second friend was Margaret MacFadyen, who passed away very suddenly in Oban on february 11th. and we extend our deepest sympathy to her family in the sad loss especially to her husband, Jim, daughter and son in-law, Catriona and Allan Brodie, and to her sister, Muriel. Margaret was born in Glasgow and worded in the land army during the last war but she and Jim moved to Tigh-na-Craig soon after they married and remained there until the fire in 1956 forced them to move to Glendyke. They retired to the Manse Flat in Arinagour 2 years ago. Margaret ran the launderette in Arinagour for Alastair Oliphant for several years and she also took up stone polishing and making jewellery for the Craft Shop when it first opened. She will be greatly missed on the island.
