The Coll Show
The 65th Coll Agricultural and Horticultural Society Show was held on Friday, 1st August 1986. The day was a great success, due largely to the weather and the unfailing support of local people and visitors.
The Horticultural Section was judged by Mr Percy, of Fort William, and the winner of both the Horticultural Cup and the Christina MacFadyen Rosebowl for floral arrangements was Mrs C. Brodie.
The Home Produce tables were laden and, as usual, the standard of exhibit high. Mrs A. Williams, Tiree, judged these classes and both the Industrial Cup and the Scones and Pancakes Cup were won by Mrs C. Mac Kinnon.
The number of entries in the Handcrafts Section were disappointing, particularly in the knitting, but characteristically the standard was high. Mrs N. Knapman, Tiree, judged and Mrs M. Toole won the Handcrafts Cup.
The Sheep Classes, judged by Mr H. MacEachern, Kenna Craig, were well represented and the competition keen. The cup winners were: Fiona Cup - Mr C. Kennedy; Kenneth Cup - Mr M. Taylor; Same Tankard - Mr C. Kennedy.
A display of Highland Dancing was given by Mrs C. MacKinnon's dancers, with an additional display by Kirsteen and MarieAnn Leask - on Coll visiting their grandparents.
The sports, organised by Mr D. Moore and Mr D. Allan, attracted a respectable number of participants, the road race being won by Mr G. Kniveton. The children's sports trophy was won by L.N. Bristol. Musical entertainment throughout the afternoon and accompaniment to the dancing was provided by Julianna Nicholls and Ron Thewlis. A number of sideshows were organised by local people, including competitions involving carrying large numbers of the 1st edition of the Coll Magazine on one's head, identifying aerial photographs of Coll, and a treasure hunt.
The day culminated in a dance, with music by Willie Cameron, where Mr A. Brodie, convenor, called upon Mrs M. Toole, retiring secretary of the Society, to present the cups.
