We are very sad indeed to report the death of Mrs P.K. Hinkson of the Garden House, Coll, on October 12th, 1985. Mrs Hinkson, born in 1900, was the last surviving daughter of the late Sir Thomas Colyer-Fergusson of Ightham Mote, Kent. During the first world war she joined the Land Army where she learned to work a horse and plough while still in her teens, and throughout her life she was a skilled and enthusiastic gardener. Mrs Hinkson began visiting the island in the mid-thirties when her brother, Billy, was living here. From then on she visited regularly until, in 1956, she settled into Airidh Mhaoraich, the house of her dreams (see p. 12 of last year's magazine). Twelve years later she moved into the Garden House where, over the years, she welcomed her numerous visitors with unfailing kindness and generous hospitality. She was a keen supporter of the Church, the Coll Agricultural Society (of which she was secretary for many years), the Women's Guild and other island activities and a popular provider of summer tea-parties and donkey rides for children. She was, in short, a woman of rare worth and her vigorous personality will be long remembered by all who knew her and long mourned by those of us privileged to call her friend.
